“I can get you to number 1 in Google”. This is a phrase I see all too often and unfortunately a lot of people invest their hard earned cash into these schemes expecting to see magical results and sales figures go through the roof.
My main problem with this “phrase” is that it’s half true. You can be number 1 in Google for obscure search terms. However the users that click through will most likely be searching for something else and not purchase anything from your site or find the information relevant to what they were looking for. Most of the time searching for your own company name on Google will result in your site being featured on page one anyway. The people you want to target are the people that are searching for the product/services you sell. Be specific, it’s unrealistic to expect your site to show up when someone searches for ‘T-Shirts’, but optimise your site for ‘Nike Football T-Shirts’ and you’ll be getting nearer the mark.
Before you even think about spending money on SEO you need to understand your business, your target audience and you should be looking into your website analytics to evaluate your user trends. This will allow you to see how users are finding you, what they are doing when they are on your site, how long they spend on your site and more importantly how they are not finding you.
You cannot blame people for people for investing in these schemes because they promise results. Just not the results you would expect. Many of these systems use elaborate link building techniques that promise X amount of visits to your site, but I would expect your bounce rate would go through the roof and the risk of getting black listed by Google will significantly increase due to the use of black hat techniques that Google doesn’t approve of.
It’s not all doom and gloom.
Getting a well ranked website for your product or service isn’t an impossible process. All Google ask for is quality relevant content provided in the correct manner. This is achievable by keeping SEO and Usability in mind from day 1 when building the website right through to every product entry. By providing your users the content they are looking for, you are in turn providing Google with the information it needs to give your website a good Page Rank.
